Transportation Solutions

San José State students are fortunate enough to have a campus which is located in Downtown San José. In addition to the modes of private transportation, the public transportation infrastructure links the SJSU campus to the entire Bay Area.

PARKING PERMIT

Students who utilize private automobiles as their primary mode of transportation to and from the San José State campus can make use of the various parking garages available to students. The parking garages available to students and their guests are:

10th Street Garage - Located in the same complex as the Bursar's Office, the 10th street garage is located on 10th and San Fernando.

4th Street Garage - Located on 4th Street and San Salvador.

7th Street Garage - Located across the street from the Hoover, Royce and Washburn Residence Halls, the 7th Street garage is regarded as the "housing" garage. During the school day, after the garage has reached a certain capacity, parking monitors will only allow E, S, and D permits for a period of time.

Note that there are certain restrictions to parking in the garages:

• A day permit expires at midnight on the date purchased
• Only employees with an 'E' permit may park in the employee designated zones
• Parking permits are non-transferable

Violations of the above restrictions are subject to fines by the University Police Department. If you have received a parking citation and believe it to be in err, you must appeal your permit at the UPD front office located next to the entrance of the 7th street garage.

A housing parking permit may be purchased at The Permit Store, or at the Bursar's Office. There is an additional service fee for purchasing a permit online. This fee may be avoided by buying a permit at the Bursar's Office. Note that the Bursar's Office only accepts checks or cash payments. For more information on parking please click here

PARK & RIDE

Students looking for a more economical solution to parking have available to them the Park and Ride program. San José State University has an off-campus lot located near Spartan Village/Spartan Stadium. SJSU provides a shuttle service to and from the Park and Ride lot which makes stops on campus every 20 minutes. Click here for more information.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Valley Transportation Authority
San José State University students receive a Valley Transportation Authority sticker. This sticker allows San José State students to ride any VTA bus or light rail at no additional cost, provided it is affixed to the outside of the plastic tower card sleeve that comes with the tower card with the student photo clearly displayed. Do not attach the VTA sticker to your tower card. Replacement sleeves can be purchased at the Bursar's Office. VTA buses can take students almost anywhere in Santa Clara county. Check the VTA website for detailed routes. Maps and time schedules are also available at the Transportation Solutions office located in the Student Union.

Cal Train
Cal Train spans from San Francisco to Gilroy. The station closest to San José State is San José Tamien, located a bit past the HP Pavilion on Santa Clara Street. During the weekday, SJSU students can take DASH, or, the Downtown Area Shuttle to the Cal Train station. The closest DASH stop is across the street from the Library. Alternatively, students can take VTA line 68 from the stop at 2nd street.

BART
The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system also goes into San Francisco, but covers stops in the East Bay as well up to Pittsburg/Bay Point. The closest BART station is located in Fremont. VTA line 301 is an express bus that leads directly from San José Tamien (see directions in Cal Train) to the Fremont BART station. Note that the amount of travel time via BART and Cal Train to San Francisco is roughly equal.>

BICYCLES

There are various bikes racks on campus for SJSU students to use. These are mostly intended as temporary bike racks. For more long term bike parking, try the bike cages on campus. These are secure cages that can only be accessed by someone who has a key. A key can be obtained at Transportation Solutions at the Student Union for a $10 deposit fee. It is not recommended for students living in on-campus housing to store their bicycles in the lounge or the patio areas of their residence halls.
